    Découverte de matériaux capables de réaliser une photosynthèse artificielle

    La capacité de photosynthèse des plantes a toujours intéressé les scientifiques, qui tentent de produire en laboratoire des matériaux artificiels disposant de propriétés similaires aux plantes. Un groupe de chercheurs de l’Institut de Chimie de l’Université d’Etat de Campinas (Unicamp) développe ainsi des matériaux avec une structure à l’échelle nanométrique capables de réaliser une photosynthèse artificielle produisant de l’énergie.

    Les nanotechnologies en renfort pour le nettoyage des marées noires

    Les rejets d’hydrocarbure dans la mer et les eaux contaminées par des métaux lourds représentent un risque écologique important dont l’une des conséquences est la disparition de faunes et de flores marines. Ces pollutions des eaux ne sont pas aussi rares que l’on pourrait le penser ; par exemple, près de 20.000 marées noires sont reportées chaque année aux Etats-Unis [1]. La dépollution d’une zone contaminée est très coûteuse. Elle pèse sur l’économie de manière significative tant sur les entreprises du secteur que sur la société en général. Un exemple marquant de marée noire récente est la fuite de pétrole sous-marine de la plateforme pétrolière Deepwater Horizon suite à son explosion. Cette fuite a déversé près de 4,9 millions de barils de pétroles dans le Golfe du Mexique et a coûté à la firme qui exploitait le site plus de 12,5 milliards de dollars en amendes et frais de dépollution.

    EUROPE : Le Parlement européen défend l’obligation d’étiquetage [nano] pour les produits alimentaires

    Le Parlement européen vient de rejeter le projet de Règlement proposé par la Commission qui visait à restreindre l’obligation d’étiquetage [nano] dans l’alimentation prévu fin 2014.

    Réunis en session plénière à Strasbourg, les eurodéputés ont adopté la motion de résolution (à 402 voix pour, 258 contre et 14 abstentions)1, confirmant ainsi le vote de la commission ENVI du Parlement européen (environnement, santé publique et sécurité alimentaire) du 5 février dernier.

    Purification de l’eau : étude d’un polymère organique et poreux très efficace

    Eliminer plus de 99% de métaux lourds présents dans l’eau en 5 secondes grâce à un polymère organique poreux à faible coût, tel est le résultat présenté récemment par une équipe de l’Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN [1]) d’A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research).

    Eliminer les métaux lourds qui peuvent polluer l’eau lors de son passage dans les canalisations et systèmes de plomberie est une étape importante pour la consommation d’eau potable. Les concentrations de ces particules toxiques pour l’homme doivent être réduites au maximum, avec par exemple un seuil maximum de concentration de plomb dans l’eau établi à 10 parties par milliard selon l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé.

    Gestion des risques liés aux nanotechnologies. Une coopération Europe-Etats-Unis

    Sans que l’on s’en aperçoive vraiment, les nanotechnologies et les nanomatériaux envahissent de plus en plus notre quotidien. On les retrouve un peu partout, par exemple dans les appareillages électroniques modernes, certains médicaments, produits cosmétiques et pommades, textiles, cellules solaires ou encore additifs alimentaires. Cette situation n’est pas sans poser de problèmes environnementaux, de santé et de sécurité. Ainsi, au sein de l’Europe et aux Etats-Unis, on a vu se développer des législations éparses et parfois incohérentes entre elles. Récemment, la nécessité d’une harmonisation entre les réglementations Européennes et Américaines est devenue une évidence.

    Nouvelle mise à jour de l’inventaire des produits de consommation contenant des nanomatériaux par le PEN

    L’inventaire des « nanoproduits » du Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN) du Woodrow Wilson Institute vient d’être mis à jour en collaboration avec le Virginia Tech Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology. Cet inventaire des produits de consommation contenant des nanomatériaux comptabilise désormais 1628 produits sur le marché mondial, dont 440 au niveau européen.
